DSL - How does it work?

The phone line from the telephone company's central office (CO) to the client's location (home or business) is often referred to as "the last mile."

This "last mile" of copper wiring has long been the bottleneck to providing fast data services to homes and businesses--until now. DSL utilizes a line-coding scheme that for the first time allows very high-speed, affordable connections over this last mile.

All flavors of DSL services (i.e. ADSL, IDSL, SDSL, etc. are collectively referred to as xDSL) require special hardware at both ends of the circuit, at the client premises and at the phone company central office (CO) that handles that client's local exchange. Several companies have taken up the tedious and expensive task of installing DSL equipment in COs across the country in order to provide DSL on a wholesale basis to ISPs.

We are currently offering Covad service but may add other providers soon. Bway.net maintains high-speed connections from Covad's network to the Internet.

In the near term, DSL availability depends primarily upon whether Covad> has yet installed equipment in your designated CO. Deployment schedules can also vary by individual line conditions and other factors.

Service Options 5 levels of service/price points

Downstream Upstream (xDSL) Suggested user profile
up to 144Kbps up to 144Kbps (IDSL) Backward compatible with most existing ISDN hardware
up to 192Kbps up to 192Kbps (SDSL) Individual power users
up to 384Kbps up to 384Kbps(SDSL) Best buy! Perfect for small business LAN to Internet and VPNs.
up to 768Kbps up to 768Kbps (SDSL) More capacity for mid-size firms.
up to 1.1Mbps up to 1.1Mbps (SDSL) Nearly T-1 bandwidth for 1/3 the price.
up to 1.5Mbps up to 384Kbps (ADSL) Power Web surfers who download more than they upload

Scalable:

DSL service options offers unprecidented flexibility; no physical re-installation needed from 192Kbps to 1.1 Mbps -- just an easy software upgrade and use thesame hardware.

High-quality symmetric DSL

Enables many key business applications including server hosting, videoconferencing, Virtual Private Network (VPN), and shared whiteboard. Asymmetric DSL (ADSL) , which offers much more bandwidth downstream than upstream, is well-suited to faster Web surfing. However, as new applications like videoconferencing become more popular, asymmetric bandwidth may be a limitation. Symmetric bandwidth is also more appropriate for server hosting (i.e. mail, ftp, Web). Covad provides solutions based on Asymmetric DSL (ADSL), Symmetric DSL (SDSL), and ISDN DSL (IDSL) technologies.

DSL is the perfect solution for small business LAN connectivity

By making T-1 dedicated bandwidth affordable, DSL is a great "equalizer" for small business. And the step-up from dial-up or ISDN access makes economic sense as well.
