| Creating .plan & .forward Files | ||||||
|
Your .plan is a text file in your home directory that is displayed to anyone who fingers you. A .forward file will send your e-mail on to another address. In order to create either type of file you must first telnet into Bway.
Telnet to Bway Run your telnet program and then connect to bway.net. When prompted, enter your username and password. You will now see a command line prompt. Editing Your .plan File Type in "pico .plan" (there is a space after pico) and you will be presented with a text editor. At this point, type in any text that you want the world to see. Once you finish, hit CTRL X. Hit Y when the program asks you if you want to save the file, and then press enter when it a sks you for the file name. The file will be saved. Setting Permissions For your ".plan" file to work it has to be world readable. This can be done by typing "chmod a+r .plan". Fingering Yourself (Forget What Your Mom Said and Just Try It) The ".plan" file that the finger deamon reads is updated every twelve hours, so although the information should now be correct it may take up to twelve hours to be displayed correctly. To see if it's working, type "finger userid" and check to see what anyone else will see when they finger you. Creating a .forward file Type the command "pico .forward" (there is a space after pico). This will open the Pico editor. In the given space, type the e-mail address (your@email.com, without any spaces or line breaks before or after it) where you want to forward all incoming mail. Type CTRL X to exit, and then press Y to save your changes, and enter for the file name. |
