Mail Abuse Prevention System (continued...)

Should you find that you cannot receive email from certain locations, i.e., if people with whom you correspond report that messages sent to you are returned to them as undeliverable, there is a chance that their ISP or organization maintains a mail server with an open relay. Often the providers or organizations are not aware of the problem (we know, because we landed on the list once ourselves and really appreciated the notice of the overlooked relay). Being on the list does not necessarily imply that the ISP or organization is involved in sending unsolicited email, but they are vulnerable to being used by spammers until the problem is addressed.

If someone with whom you correspond reports that they cannot send you mail, please give us a call. Typically, we would then ask you to have the person send us a copy of the email (with full headers - we'll explain if need be) that bounced back to them. A copy of the bounced message with full headers usually provides us with enough information to be able to determine whether the sender's outgoing mail server has been placed on the mail-abuse list. If it has, it is a quick and easy procedure to get the server removed from the list-a call or email to is generally enough. They will remove the server's IP from the list, but will continue to monitor the situation over the following days or weeks. If the server continues to be operated with an open relay or continues to send out spam, it is likely to be placed on the list once more. It can be removed again just as easily as the first time, but the server's administrators will probably find it easier in the long run to fix the open relay.

We realize that this situation can result in some inconvenience for the parties involved, but please keep in mind that the messages that fail to reach you do not simply "get lost"; the sender is always notified that the message was undeliverable. Also, there are a number of different organizations that work in a similar fashion to eliminate spam at its source. We have deliberately chosen to work together with one that presupposes good faith on the part of the administrator that operates the "offending" server and allows for quick and unbureaucratic removal of the server from the "blacklist".

We hope this answers any questions, but please contact us if you have additional questions or concerns.
