How did I get to be the way I am?
This is just another place for links, really, but these are more personal I guess. The things I want to talk about in this forum are not necessarily pertinent to my professional self. They may however have helped me shape my aesthetic sensabilities, but that could be stretching things a bit. Some of them aren't even part of my everyday world, here and now, but they helped to shape me some time ago. Maybe they still would have meaning to me in the present day, if I had time to pursue them without distractions like making a living. Then again, maybe I already spend too much time on some of this crap, but that's such a subjective evaluation. You only live once, unless we consider reincarnation, but even then, the emphasis is still on making something out of this span of time, not on regretting what you could have done differently. Hmmm, I think I have gone overboard on the philosophy. Let's get on with it:
People with whom I am affiliated
My friend and neighbor Mark Bergman's Home Page is a side trip I recommend. Mark was the first Master Electrician I ever used in New York, so our affiliation goes back a while. I do not always agree with his views on computers, but if you are Unix-savvy, you will especially enjoy his sense of humor. My sister Selene Vega's Web site is a fascinating one, if you are interested in matters of spirituality, consciousness and ritual as they relate to dance, movement and yoga. This is about as far as I think you can get from beam angles and Ohm's law, and the typical tools of trade of lighting, but she deals with Rainbows, and perhaps Illumination is a goal there as well.My intellectual interests, favorite music, hobbies, etc.
Here again, I will try to keep within the metaphor of lighting...and hopefully not reflect too tenuous a connection.- Lightbulb Jokes as tacky as it is Self-Explanatory.
- Voters Telecommunications Watch is an organization that shines light into the dark corners of how politicians and policies will affect us in cyberspace.
- Illuminati Online Is all this starting to look like some twisted conspiracy? If so, check this site out for a worldview that takes humor and paranoia to new heights.
- Illuminated Thinker and Futurist Robert Anton Wilson is a favorite author of mine. In many ways he helped to inspire the Illuminati Online site mentioned above, but this is a more serious look at his ideas.
- Babylon 5, one of the TV shows that I make a point of at least taping so that I can watch it later, has some really marvelous writing, (who else on television is taking 5 years to tell a single story in epic form?) and a lot of great special effects, but of course I watch it for the lighting. Actually, it's very poetic in its use of imagery about darkness and light. Oh, alright, call me a fan.
- Al Stewart is becoming my favorite musician. I share this with a large mailing list of his fans throughout the world, and they comprise a very intelligent and very intriguing group of people. His lyrics talk about history, and are very articulate. He once read 50 nonfictional books to prepare for the writing of the songs on an album. That's not exactly light reading.
