Sounds News Electronica Progressive Punk MP3 World Music Satellite Radio Personalized Radio Cool Sites

Check out these sounds:

Shredding Radio -- Direct mp3 downloads of shows. Reminds me of new wave radio in the early eighties, but fresher.
WGNU -- From Colorado's Boulder County -- Saturday mornings: Honky Tonk Heroes. A nice mix of Americana, Reggae, African music and progressive politics. Recent plays include Gillian Welch, Buck Owens and Iris Dement.
WFMU -- The famous, independent free-form station is now online. Lots of weird shows here: Try "Put the Needle On the Record with Billy Jam" on Friday afternoons for hip-hop and rap or Thursday night's "Music to Spazz By" for an eclectic mix from The Stooges to Etta James. This is not your parents' radio station.
Hard Rock Radio -- Hard rock and heavy metal (if that's your thing).
Radio Freejack -- Alex Bennett was a pioneer in public access cable television in the 1970s. His excellent site features many links to live radio across the U.S. and abroad. He also broadcasts on Sirius Satellite Radio.
Radio Paradise -- You can use pretty much any audio player you want and no registration is required. Modern adult alternative rock radio - Remy Zero, Ryan Adams, Neko Case, mixed with the familiar - U2, Neil Young. A good go-to station.

NEWS

We are the Record Industry -- This site has a lot of interesting news you won't read anywhere else.
Other current music news can be found at NME.

TECHNO, HIPHOP, ELECTRONICA
Digitally Imported -- Trance and Euro. Good for both fast and slow connections. You'll hear Freak Commission, The Fatback Band and Thomas Chrome.
The Selekta -- A new fanzine dedicated to the advancement of Electronic Music and the culture that it has created. Audio archives.
Astralwerks -- From the label that brings you Fatboy Slim, The Chemical Brothers and We are Scientists. You know if this is for you.

A good search engine devoted to electronic music on the web is Discogs.

Progressive & College Stations from around:

WRCT -- Check this out. Totally free form radio streamed in MP3 format from Carnegie Mellon.
KSPC -- Some wacky stuff going on here at Pomona College's radio station.
KCTY -- Viking radio live from Long Beach, California, student-run freeform internet radio. A little bit of everything. Some you'll like, some you may not.
Check out the Impact from Michigan State.
WXYC -- Rumored to be the first radio station to broadcast over the internet. College radio from Chapel Hill. Good for slow connections. Live playlists.

PUNK SOUNDS
Punkradiocast -- Daily punk internet radio shows including a Sunday night Top 40

MP3
Interested in MP3 technology? Nullsoft, maker of the Winamp player has released the SHOUTcast internet streaming audio system. For more info on streaming live audio and links to MP3 search engines, try

World Music
It's the WORLD Wide Web, the sounds of World Music are at
DJ Gerg's Reggae Jams and Emeagwali -- a list of links to African web radio!. Also check out Bolivia Radio -- Bolivian artists such as Rafael Arias and Pacha.

Satellite Radio
Satellite Radio - it ain't cheap, but it's good. There are two services out there:
XM and Sirius. They're both great sources of new music. Again, you have to pay a monthly fee, but you can get free trials at their websites.
Personalized Radio - many new sites offer you the chance to set up your own personal radio stations - FOR FREE! Three of my favorites are: Pandora, Last FM and Slacker. You type in the names of artists who you like and then you get a stream of that artist as well as others who are similar. These three services work surprisingly well.

OTHER COOL SITES
Squeezing Out Sparks -- Devoted to 1970s British new waver Graham Parker. Parker's latest CD, "Platinum Bastard" is being sold exclusively over the internet.
