FOR MY DAUGHTER

baby sleeps...
I move to shade her from
the summer dawn

     summer night
     baby on my shoulder --
     smell of pee!

arm in a sling,
silent...watches her friends
catch falling leaves

      sun on the snow,
ink and tears on her page -
      damn those teachers!

frowning, she sees me,
smiles and sticks out her tongue --
spring morning!

      my daughter holds
      a baby, both wide-eyed...
      summer soon
