ONE SUMMER NIGHT
such coolness...
sailboat leaves the dock
at twilight
boardwalk --
carnival lights hide
the setting sun
summer night...
behind the dunes
soft laughter
low tide --
young man skipping shells
over the moon
moonlit,
two swimmers embrace
in the dark sea
old man
fishes from the pier
beyond the lights
driftwood fire
dies on the empty beach --
summer dawn
captain minds
fish-finder and LORAN --
see the gulls!
gnarled hands
tie an intricate knot
in fishing line
slowly swaying
sun's disc on the sea...
the line twitches
dark water --
something holds this line
and pulls at me
noon sun...
sleeping on the top deck
while the rest fish
old man watches
a sparrow fluttering
out to sea
contented smile --
salt and scales and blood
on his shirt
mate weighs catch,
circled by hungry eyes --
pool fish?
holding up
the bluefish he caught
stiff and gray
